Former Rangers defender Kevin Mbabu impressed for Switzerland this afternoon as they kicked off their Euro 2020 campaign with a 1-1 draw against Wales – and Gers fans on Twitter are delighted to see one of the ‘Newcastle Five’ catch the eye.
Mbabu was part of a controversial loan move that saw five Newcastle youngsters arrive on loan, with the Swiss defender struggling to get close to the side during his time in Scotland.
Most of his appearances in Light Blue came at youth level with the future Swiss international hooked at half-time of a Scottish Youth Cup final mauling by Celtic.
After moving on from Newcastle, Mbabu burst to prominence at Young Boys before an £8million move to German side Wolfsburg.
The best Celtic player from every Euro 2020 nation
The right-back has become one of his country’s most reliable performers and put in an impressive shift in Baku this afternoon.
Despite being pegged back from 1-0 up and seeing a late winner disallowed by VAR, the Swiss will be happy enough with the result of their first game at Euro 2020.
While Mbabu was busy impressing, Rangers fans on Twitter were recalling the time he was a Gers player – with a few jokingly branding him an Ibrox ‘legend’.
