Ex-Ibrox teammate Fergie guided Kelty to League Two through the playoff system, knocking Brechin City out of the SPFL and earning the Fife club a place in the 42-member system for the first time.
The Gers legend has since earned a shot at the Scottish Championship with Alloa Athletic.
Thomson would then come in to replace Fergie in League Two and – as he talked up the opportunity – hinted that one day he views himself in the Ibrox hotseat currently occupied by Steven Gerrard.
“This is not a decision I took lightly,” said Thomson [Courier].
“I’ve left a wonderful club that were incredibly good to me and, in turn, I’d like to think I was a good ambassador for Rangers.
“But ultimately, if I want to be the Rangers manager in the future — or a manager at the top level — then Kelty Hearts is a brilliant place for me to learn my trade.”
To top off the ex-Ibrox merry-go-round former Gers striker Billy Dodds has also just been announced at Championship side Inverness Caledonian Thistle.
