Solution to Hagi “problem” could see Gers £7m better off

There are three ways in which the “problem” of Ianis Hagi wanting to play in the Olympics will end.

Rangers could change their minds and allow him to go, they will be a man down for the Champions League qualifiers but the player will be happy.

Steven Gerrard could put his foot down, remind Hagi who pays his wages and that, with Kemar Roofe and Glen Kamara suspended, he is vital to Rangers chances of progressing to the group stages. He might not like it but at least he would feel like an important member of the squad.

There is also a chance we could see a repeat of the Craig Moore “situation” where, not only was he stripped of the captaincy, but he was place on the transfer list too after putting his country firmly before club, if Hagi goes down this route how would it play out?

For a start, there wouldn’t be a shortage of offers. At the last count Bochum, Sevilla and Lazio were all monitoring the Romanian international with a fee between £12-15million said to be a ball park transfer fee, however, reports of a £10m release clause would still represent a £7m profit after just one season, even if it is below what many would value him at now.

If we were to sell Hagi another player capable of playing in midfield and the front three would be top of Ross Wilson’s shopping list, and as if by magic, I happen to know of one available for free and he would help our home grown player quota.

Ryan Gauld would almost perfectly fit into Hagi’s current role and if the latter does decide to kick up a fuss, I know what I’d be doing, pocketing the £7m+ profit before picking up the phone to the Scotsman’s agent, apparently already one of our director of football’s friends….
