Rangers sporting director hails Gers under-18s after third successive title

Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson has hailed the Light Blues’ under-18s after winning the CAS League for the third season in a row with the young Gers now looking forward to another shot at the UEFA Youth League.

A 3-1 win over St. Mirren yesterday afternoon sealed the title for Davie McCallum’s side after a season that Wilson admitted was “extremely difficult” for the players due to Covid restrictions forcing the season to be halted for several months.

The Gers have been dominant at under-18 level in recent years with Nathan Patterson going from under-18s to Scotland Euro 2020 squad in two years.

“I’m delighted to extend my congratulations to our U18 team following the lads lifting a third consecutive league championship trophy,” Wilson told Rangers TV.

“I am particularly pleased for this group of players as this season has been an extremely difficult one given the impact of coronavirus forcing them to spend large periods at home at a crucial part of their careers and in their development.

“As we build our football identity, we asked the coaching team to work hard to align and embed many of the team principles that Steven Gerrard and the coaching staff have implemented in our first team. We have been really pleased to see that Rangers identity developing.

“Furthermore, we have a desire to keep challenging the development of our young players through a varied games programme. We again can look forward to the excellent challenge of the UEFA Youth League in 21/22 for a third year in a row.”

Rangers headed for UEFA Youth League

The young Gers have now guaranteed their place in the UEFA Youth League for the third season in a row – although Covid would prevent the competition from taking place in 2020/21.

Rangers will be hoping they can build on their impressive debut in Europe’s premier youth competition – although they’ll still have to wait and see which path they will enter.

A third title in three years is an outstanding achievement for the Light Blues though – now the big challenge is to get more of them into the first-team at Ibrox.
