Rangers-linked Carlos Mendes Gomes decides future as he leaves Morecambe

Ahead of the summer transfer window Rangers were extensively linked to Morecambe winger Carlos Mendes Gomes – and now a decision has been made about his future.

The Shrimps winger, 22, had an unbelievable season in League Two, firing Morecambe to League One via the Playoff Final, the pacey winger scoring the only goal of the game.

In total ex-Atleti youth Mendes Gomes netted 16 goals for the club last season and there have been murmurs of transfer interest from across the UK as a result.

The Scottish Sun claimed in April that Rangers had made contact regarding the player whilst Blackburn Rovers were another name mentioned.

However, Carlos Mendes Gomes will not be moving to either of those clubs as the Championship beckons with Luton Town next season.

The Hatters announced the player’s arrival over the weekend in a move that will be considered a major coup for the club.

“We identified Carlos a long time ago, watched him and then got to a point where we agreed with Morecambe, who have been superb to deal with,” said Luton manager Nathan Jones [LTFC].

“Then I met him and I can tell you, he was a joy to meet. He’s a wonderful human being and it’s a fantastic football story of where he’s come from.

“WE spent hours together, myself and him and his representatives. We met his family, who are really close-knit, and we are really delighted to get him. We really think he has an opportunity.

“He has wonderful ability and has shown great, great character.”

Rangers have been linked to plenty of players ahead of next season but as per usual, Ibrox lips are sown up tight ahead regarding any potential transfers.

The club have been linked to a South American attacker who has already been compared to a global superstar despite being only 21.
