Party leader who lambasted Rangers fans caught breaching Covid-19 rules

The leader of the Green Party has been caught breaching Covid-19 rules just months after he lambasted Rangers fans for breaking rules to gather during the pandemic.

Patrick Harvie was particularly distasteful as he criticised Rangers fans in March for gathering to celebrate the club’s long-awaited title victory during a national lockdown.

The language used by Harvie was particularly distressing to Rangers supporters with a sentiment that the outspoken politician’s language and vehemence was inappropriate.

The Greens MSP for Glasgow even called for the Gers to be shut down.

“We’d all like to go to mass gatherings. Some people would like to go to a party political conference – I’d like to go to a beer festival – but we don’t,” said Harvie [Glasgow Times].

“The organisations and businesses that run such events have had to stop until it’s safe. Why should a football club be any different?

“A football club which, let’s be honest, seriously did nothing to prevent dangerous mass gatherings in its name, gatherings which trashed the public realm, risked the safety of front line workers as well as posing a public health threat.

“Surely it’s not enough just to appeal to the good sense of those who’ve shown that they don’t care?

“Why are we even contemplating letting this business carry on in the weeks ahead when we know it’s likely to generate a repeat of the scenes we saw at the weekend?”

However, despite these comments Harvie would – according to the science surrounding the coronavirus – take place in a much more dangerous breach by meeting indoors with more than three households.

Leading epidemiologists have told the New York Times that transmission of the virus outdoors is minimal and potentially equates to 0.1% of transmissions.

This means increased mixing indoors is the single biggest risk to spreading the coronavirus – something the likes of Harvie will be well aware of.

However, Harvie was snapped in a posh Edinburgh bar with more than three households in a flagrant display of contempt for the rules which his government helped design.

To make matters worse, the politician has also previously taken aim at political rivals with self-righteous posturing only to be found in breach of the rules himself and made to look hypocritical.

Harvie and the Green party have since apologised for the breach but Rangers fans will still feel let down by governmental leaders being found to hold double standards.

What’s that old saying about politicians asking us to do as they say but not as they do?

Rangers fans are sick and tired of double standards from this government in particular and called out yet another case of it taking place this week
