Steven Gerrard will return to Merseyside as a manager for the first-time since leaving Liverpool to take up the reins at Ibrox in 2018 and Mellon knows the Light Blues well from his time at Dundee United last season.

After Rangers won the Scottish Premiership by going unbeaten across all 38 games, the Light Blues would be a formidable challenge for anyone, with Mellon looking to learn a lot about his side tomorrow afternoon.

“I’m looking forward to seeing where we are up to as a team at the minute,” Mellon told the Liverpool Echo.

“It’s a great opportunity against the Scottish champions and it’s a great chance for us to see where we are up to as a group, and it is the ultimate test.

“We’ve still got a few players that we want to bring in, but the group that we have so far, have done very well, and it’s time for a game to see where we are up to in terms of fitness and tactically to see what we can do.

“We will have a massive test from Rangers, but we will learn a lot from the game about what we have to do moving forward after the final whistle.

“I know how good a team Rangers are, but the important thing is that we get what we need to get out of it for Tranmere, which is that fitness and where we can improve, and to keep moving us towards that kick-off.”

Rangers clash should see Gers stars return to action for Gerrard’s side

After the Light Blues faced Partick Thistle on Monday with a starting XI consisting of a number of fringe players, many of Gerrard’s established stars will likely return to the side for the Tranmere clash.

The Liverpool icon will be looking forward to trying to guide his side through the upcoming Champions League qualifers and attempting to defend the Scottish title Rangers won for the first time in a decade last season.
