John Bennett details Rangers transfer strategy as Steven Gerrard bids for title 56

JOHN BENNETT admits Rangers took a 'calculated' risk in the transfer market last summer in order to build the squad that delivered a historic 55th Premiership title.

But the Ibrox vice-chairman insists they will not 'overreach' themselves going forward as attentions turn to the defence of their crown and a crack at the Champions League.

Steven Gerrard was able to retain all of his key players 12 months ago as Rangers fended off interest in the likes of Ryan Kent and Alfredo Morelos and instead invested in the Ibrox squad.

That blueprint would pay huge rewards as the Premiership title was secured and Bennett is sure Rangers will strike the right balance this time around under the guidance of sporting director Ross Wilson.

“Recruitment is king here," Bennett told the Louden Tavern podcast. “Hats off to Ross Wilson and his team for the recruitment we made.

“I think where we are now is absolutely quality over quantity.

“We showed that last summer with Kemar Roofe and the other signings.

“I think we are a very highly respected team in European football again.

“We knew what we had to do last year in the teeth of Covid. We did it and we took that calculated risk.

“And we will go for quality over quantity again but we have to do it within the confines of a sustainable model.

“That is in in the interests of absolutely everybody. It would be reckless to do it in any other fashion.

“No board should take [this club] back to where it was, which was overreach – and that was before the bad guys go it.

“You see it time and time again where owners overreach – we mustn't do that.

“We think we can achieve every success we want to achieve at home and in Europe within the bandwidth of a sustainable model."
